A New Beginning

Volume 01

After a life of heavy use and hopeful dreams, many engines typically spend the remainder of their lives tucked away in need of repair and restoration. Always on the search for affordable classics that need a second lease on life, team E was overjoyed to find a complete 1978 Husqvarna 250WR. Historically, the WR was overshadowed by its cousin the CR. The annotation CR (closed ratio) and WR (wide ratio) was Husqvarna’s answer to racers who were enamored with the world of desert racing across the Mojave and Baja California. Desert racing was so attractive to the average excitment seekers, that with the help of celebrity stars such as Steve Mcqueen, Sydney Portier, and Malcolm Smith Husqvarna’s were flying off the showroom floors at dealerships around the US. Fast forward 40+ years and enthusiasts are still escaping to the desert to enjoy some unrestricted fun. Desert racing today is not as popular as it was in the 60’s and 70’s, but there has been a resurgence. So in the spirit of having a good time with friends and family, Team E tore into the restorable Husqvarna with haste.

Two strokes are a thing of the past for many riders. They are tricky to tune with powerbands that force riders to be aware at all times. The technology falls between the fields of diehard fans and those that refuse to even sit on a bike that has an expansion chamber. With the surge of four stroke technology in the field of racing, anyone would be hard pressed to find a ring a ding purring down any circuit in today’s modern times. Don’t get us wrong, there are those enthusiasts that swear by them. I’ve come to the realization it simply comes down to preference of the rider, a kind of love them or hate them for better or worse. In the early days of motocross and desert scramblers, almost every racer rode two stroke motorcycles. Unfortunately, that doesn’t necessarily apply today. With less examples of these types of bikes being raced and ridden, many mechanical shops don’t work on them. Times have changed for the better one may say. Once we had the frame torn apart and pulled the engine out of the chassis, Team E was fortunate enough to find a shop that still works on classic motocross bikes such as the Husqvarna, Maico, Honda and Yamaha two strokes. LED performance, located in Portland, Oregon, has been building reliable and fast two stroke motors for almost 40+ years. With a resume of accomplishments, master mechanic for team USA MX to national winning motors for chainsaw competitions, LED knows their stuff. So when it came down to building the Husqvarna 250WR motor, this was the first stop on our list.  After recieving the engine back we quickly put it into our freshly powdercoated frame and and began the long process of assembly. With new wheels, tires, shocks, freshly painted tank, fenders and leather seat stitched by New Church Moto, we were ready for all the desert racing we could find.
